Overview
Emma MacCallum is a PhD student in Comparative Politics with a regional focus on Latin America. Her research interests include civil society organizations, state and criminal violence, and civil conflict. Emma's work also examines the implications of foreign aid, and the contraction of US foreign aid, for civil society sectors in Latin America. She leverages extensive field work, mixing qualitative and quantitative methods.
Emma is a graduate research assistant with the Gender and Security Sector Lab (GSS), led by Dr. Sabrina Karim, where she collaborates on research related to women's experiences in peace and security operations. She is also a research assistant for Dr. Santiago Anría in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations.
Professional Experience
Prior to starting her PhD, she earned a B.A. in Government and Latin American Studies from Colby College. She then worked as a Research Assistant at Colgate University and at the Do Good Institute at the University of Maryland, College Park.
